Prof Mitchell is a Consultant Neonatal Paediatrician at St Mary’s Hospital for Women & Children, Manchester, and Honorary Professor at the University of Salford, College of Health & Social Care. His clinical responsibilities include the running of the newborn intensive care unit for medical and surgical neonates. His personal interests include: • Neonatal ventilation • Non-invasive respiratory support • Neonatal hearing screening • Normal newborn examination, screening & care of well infants • Education & training including the teaching and clinical training of neonatal nurse practitioners and midwifes. Prof Mitchell has undertaken medicolegal work as an expert in neonatology since 2004, with instructions from solicitors acting either for the Claimant or the Defendant in the UK, Ireland, West Indies and Australia. He was elected as an individual member of the Expert Witness Institute in June 2007. He has given evidence as an expert witness in the Coroner’s Court and in the High Court in England.
