Dr Rahila Khan joined as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and lead in Maternal Medicine, since 2010. She has broad experience in all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, including high-risk pregnancies and intrapartum management. She is also the joint Maternal Medicine lead of Sussex Maternal Medicine Network at Worthing Hospital and does joint Maternal Medicine Clinic at Brighton Sub Hub every 8 weeks.
Ms Khan has written many root cause analysis reports on obstetric incidents, and serious untoward incident reports for UHS NHS Trust. Reflection on these cases has led to her interest in medico-legal work. After training in report writing, she joined Pyper Medical Services in 2021 and has completed 110 expert reports. Currently, she is preparing 3 reports per month.
Ms Khan has been the principal investigator of several multi-centre research projects. In her present post, she established a Maternal Medicine clinic to treat pregnant women with complex medical conditions. She was the lead for Diabetic Pregnancy and ran the joint diabetic clinic with a consultant endocrinologist from 2010 until 2021.
She is the lead in Risk Review meetings at Worthing Hospital. Complex cases are discussed in Obstetric Risk Review meetings. She also leads ‘Joint Perinatal Meeting’ where cases are presented and discussed. These helped to develop her interest in risk management.
She obtained her medical degree from Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh, and moved to UK for higher training in 1989. She became the member of RCOG in 1993. She passed the United States Medical Licensing exam in 1993 and enrolled in a two year Clinical Fellowship Programme in Maternal Fetal Medicine at University of Connecticut Health Centre, USA, which included management of complex cases and fetal ultrasound scanning.
