Details

Stephen C Clark is the Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiopulmonary Transplantation at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne and the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of Northumbria.

After qualifying in 1989, Professor Clark was appointed as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in 2000 following training in Newcastle, Cambridge, London and Toronto. He currently practices widely in all forms of adult cardiac surgery including cardiopulmonary transplantation and is a Medical Examiner for the Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust.

With over 20 years experience in the field, Professor Clark occupies a number of leadership and national roles related to his field including Specialist Advisor for Cardiothoracic Surgery for the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, Associate Advisor in Cardiac Surgery for the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman and Professional Advisor for the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman. He is the Chairman of the European Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Professor Clark has extensive experience in medicolegal and coronial expert witness work. He holds the Diploma in Legal Medicine (DLM) of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians of London.

He can be instructed nationwide on all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery and transplantation for personal injury and clinical negligence cases, recently authoring the cardiothoracic surgery chapter of the textbook Clinical Negligence. In particular instructions concerning clinical negligence in cardiac surgical operations or surgical techniques, heart and lung transplantation, delayed diagnoses, trauma and chest injuries. Professor Clark acts in equal proportion for claimants and defendants.

In addition to his medicolegal work for the Courts, Professor Clark is experienced in media work and can be approached to provide opinion and analysis on matters related to cardiothoracic surgery and transplantation for media organisations including print and television.

Training

Professor Clark qualified in 1989 and then trained in London, Cambridge, Newcastle and Toronto gaining his Consultant post in 2000. Qualifications include: Bachelor of Medical Science first class honours, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Diploma of Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Clinical Surgery in General Section, Doctorate of Medicine, Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
