Mr Hammer is a Consultant Ophthalmologist based in Glasgow. He retired from the NHS work in May 2023. Prior to this he was Consultant Ophthalmologist, at Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology, at the University of Glasgow.
His appointment was made primarily to support and develop the well-established Regional Retinal Service in Glasgow. This service is currently run by 6 consultants and performs upwards of 1500 procedures per annum on patients from Glasgow and the West of Scotland with posterior segment problems of all levels of complexity.
In addition, Mr Hammer has expertise with retinal dystrophies and related conditions. He undertook 2 retinal and general ophthalmic clinics per week, and an additional session supervising the Acute Eye Emergency Service which sees up to 50 urgent ophthalmic cases per day of all levels of complexity.
Mr Hammer has been a Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, He was also an Examiner for the F.R.C.S. at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and for the F.R.C.Ophth examination of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He has published widely and gave frequent lectures at Ophthalmology meetings, to General Practitioners, nursing students, orthoptists, and also to patient groups, particularly local branches of the British Retinitis Pigmentosa Society.
Mr Hammer regular prepares medical reports on personal injury cases and also cases of potential medical negligence. These are in his areas of expertise, namely trauma, general ophthalmology, and surgical retina. He prepares in the order of 25-30 reports per annum.
He has undertaken Medico-legal Expert Witness training course in London, September 2015 and December 2023. These were aimed principally at doctors who prepare many medico-legal reports.
