Mr Jonathan Durnian
Expert in Neuro-Ophthalmology and General Ophthalmology
Mr Durnian has vast experience dealing with all aspects of general ophthalmology as well as neuro-ophthalmology and strabismus.
Mr Durnian is the author of over 30 research papers covering all aspects of ophthalmology.
Mr Durnian has carried out medicolegal work since 2013 and has been awarded the Cardiff University Bond Solon Expert Witness Certificate. He produces on average 100-130 reports a year with the claimant:defendant:joint work ratio of approximately 35:55:10.
Ms Rumana Hussain
Expert in Ocular Oncology
Ms Hussain is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Ocular Oncology and Vitreoretinal surgery and leads the Vitreoretinal service at the Liverpool University Foundation Trust Hospitals. She did her undergraduate medical degree and MA (Oxon) in Physiological Sciences at Oxford University and did her clinical training at King’s College, London.
Ms Hussain has been doing medicolegal reports since 2022 and is currently undergoing medicolegal training.
Mr Say Aun Quah
Expert in Refractive Surgery
Mr Quah has extensive experience in management of Ophthalmology conditions in children and adults. He did his ophthalmic training in Liverpool and did an Anterior Segment and Refractive Surgery fellowship in Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
His surgical expertise includes surgical and laser management of refractive error, performing over 1000 cases of Excimer refractive corrections (LASEK, LASIK, i-LASIK, SMILE) and being involved in the management of more complex refractive cases. His other surgical experience includes routine and complicated cataract surgery, premium lens implantation and post laser refractive surgery lens operation. He has performed over 300 corneal transplantations (PK, DALK and DSEK).
Mr Quah has been writing Medico-Legal reports since 2011. He produces on average 20 to 30 reports a year with a claimant:defendant work ratio of approximately 60:40.
Professor Ian A Pearce
Expert in Medical and Surgical Retina
Through his extensive clinical and research experience in a wide range of retinal disorders Ian has been invited as clinical expert advisor to NICE for several novel drug appraisals and medical innovation developments which have revolutionized the management of ocular conditions in the past decade.
Professor Pearce has prepared expert medico-legal reports for over 18 years with an approximate 80:20 claimant/defendant ratio. He is invited Ophthalmology chapter author for the 5th Edition Clinical Negligence (2015, Powers & Barton).
Professor Jane Louise Ashworth
Expert in Paediatric Ophthalmology
Professor Jane Ashworth has been a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Paediatric Ophthalmologist at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital since 2007, and has specialist expertise in disorders of the eye in childhood, including cerebral visual impairment and birth injuries, trauma, strabismus and amblyopia, genetic eye conditions, paediatric uveitis and retinopathy of prematurity.
Professor Ashworth has carried out medicolegal work since 2016 and has been awarded the Cardiff University Bond Solon Expert Witness Certificate. She has provided approximately 100 reports in the last 2 years. Her work is approximately 55% claimant, 40% defendant and 5% joint and she has appeared in Court on several occasions. She has been on the GMC medicolegal expert witness list since 2021, providing expert evidence in fitness to practice cases.
Mr Austin McCormick
Expert in Oculoplastic, Orbital and Lacrimal Surgery
Mr McCormick reports on medicolegal cases involving oculoplastics, orbital and lacrimal surgery. He achieved the Bond Solon Expert Witness Certificate in 2017.
Mr Christopher Hemmerdinger
Expert in Glaucoma and Cataract Surgery
Mr Hemmerdinger is a high-volume cataract surgeon, performing over 1000 cataracts per year. He performs complex cataract surgery, implanting all types of intraocular lenses. He is also a comprehensive glaucoma surgeon with a special interest in non-penetrating glaucoma surgery, however, perform all types of glaucoma surgery including trabeculectomy, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and glaucoma drainage devices. Mr. Hemmerdinger performs several hundred glaucoma procedures each year.
Mr Hemmerdinger has attended medicolegal and clinical negligence courses. He has been producing medicolegal reports since 2020.
Mr Neil Hilton
Expert in Optometry
Mr Hilton has always had an interest in bespoke contact lenses which fuelled his interest in myopia management.
Mr Hilton started expert witness work in 2020 and reports on 5-10 cases a year, which is increasing all the time. He has successfully completed the Bond Solon training for Expert Witnesses.
Mr Hilton’s career has given him the necessary exposure to and experience in all areas of Optometry giving him a very rounded approach to expert witness work.
