Dr Gayathri Venkatesan trained in General Adult Psychiatry in the UK within the Northern deanery with specialisation in Neuropsychiatry. She was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in January 2011 and completed Post Graduate Certificate of Advancing Practice in Autism, November 2013.
Dr Venkatesan has been working as a Consultant from January 2015, at the Regional Neuropsychiatry service at Walkergate Park, Newcastle, working in Neurobehavioral Neurorehabilitation inpatient service managing patients with cognitive, emotional and behavioural difficulties following brain injury.
Dr Venkatesan provides outpatient service for assessment and management of cognitive and mental health problems in patients with acquired brain injury following trauma, infection, stroke, encephalitis, sub arachnoid haemorrhage, tics and neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. She is also involved in psychiatric assessment of patients undergoing DBS surgery.
Dr Venkatesan specialises in assessment and management of behavioural changes due to altered neural circuits and cognitive dysfunction in brain injury and illness. She also provides second opinion and advice on complex Neuropsychiatric presentations.
As Regional Specialty Representative (RSR) for Neuropsychiatry, Dr Venkatesan is involved in recruitment of Neuropsychiatrists.
Dr Venkatesan is involved in various research projects including STOP – D study which is a multicentre study on antidepressants following head injury.
Dr Venkatesan is involved in undergraduate and post graduate teaching. She is a member of the International Neuropsychiatry association and presented in international forums.
Dr Venkatesan is a Member of the Royal college of Psychiatrists and Executive member of the Faculty of Neuropsychiatry, Chair of Neurorehabilitation working group at the Faculty of Neuropsychiatry, Royal college of Psychiatrists. She is a member of Faculty of expert witness.
