Mr George Doughty retired from active underwriting in August 2020 since when he has been a self-employed expert witness, consultant and lecturer specialising in political risk and trade credit insurance.

He is a respected London Market lead with over 35 years’ experience in political and trade credit risks including 8 years as a broker and 28 years as a specialist underwriter. Acknowledged as one of the Lloyd’s market leaders and initiator of loss mitigation plans resulting in significant post-claim recoveries to both the insurance and reinsurance market.

Valued as an expert witness receiving instructions arising from both direct and reinsurance disputes related to political risk, political violence and trade credit policies. Virtual and in person cross examination experience before LCIA, SIAC & ICC Arbitral Tribunals. Since September 2020 he has been instructed as an expert witness on 14 disputes.

Experienced negotiator used to working alongside senior executives and government officials in difficult and sometimes sensitive situations.

Last full-time position was as the Underwriter of Lloyd’s specialist RITC Shelbourne Syndicate 2008. This involved the active management of a substantial run off portfolio of policies, claims and recoveries across all insurance and reinsurance lines including one of the largest live books of political risk and trade credit policies in the Lloyd’s insurance market.

He has a reputation for treating people from varied walks of life in a firm, fair and friendly manner with the aim of encouraging them to develop their interests and potential both in a professional and voluntary capacity.

Mr Doughty is the author of “The Contrasting Roles of an Expert Witness and “Hired Gun” Litigators” published in February 2024 edition of the Expert Witness Journal.
