Mr Redfern is a retired Consultant Neurosurgeon. He graduated from the London Hospital Medical School in 1977, and having undertaken general surgical training in London, Cardiff, and Merseyside obtained the FRCS (England) in 1983. He then undertook neurosurgery training in Liverpool (1983-88) and London (Brook-Maudsley rotation, 1988-92). He worked as a consultant in  Morriston Hospital from 1992 to 2018. He is a former member of the Royal College of Surgeons Neurosurgery SAC (2004-11) and Opportunities in Surgery Committee (2005-10).

His areas of expertise include:

• Work-related lumbar spine injury
• Drug delivery systems for relief of pain &/or spasticity

He has refereed articles for Acta Neurochirurgica and BJNS (British Journal of Neurosurgery), and is a former regular reviewer for ACNR (Advances in Clinical Neurosciences and Rehabilitation). He undertook voluntary work annually teaching in the Neurosurgery Dept in Da Nang Hospital, Vietnam (2009 - 13).

Medico-legal experience
Mr Redfern has been a Member of the Academy of Experts (since 1996) and uses their Model Terms of Engagement. For 8 years (up until retirement) he frequently reported as a clinical assessor for the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO).

He has been preparing medico-legal reports for over 30 years, approximately 40 new cases p.a. (75% claimant; 15% SJE; 10% defendant), and has been undertaking medical negligence work for 15 years, approximately 15 cases p.a. dealing with Breach, Causation, Condition, and Prognosis.  

Recent court attendances have been infrequent due to cases settling but he is regularly required to prepare joint statements of agreement/disagreement with other experts and to undertake conferences with counsel.

Appointments are generally undertaken in Swansea University but, when it is deemed more appropriate, consultations can be arranged as a Domiciliary Visit.
