Details

Clinical Experience

  • Consultant General Paediatrician with sub speciality accreditation in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
  • Since, in October 2018, appointed as a full-time substantive Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine within the Emergency Department at Birmingham Children's Hospital, Birmingham Women’s and Children's NHS Trust.
  • Birmingham Children's Hospital is a Paediatric Major Trauma Centre. Therefore, Dr Kanani leads the resuscitation and stabilisation of significantly injured children (road traffic accidents, falls from windows, strangulations, head injuries etc) from across the West Midlands region.
  • Birmingham Children's Hospital is also a tertiary paediatric hospital. Therefore, Dr Kanani leads the resuscitation and stabilisation of the critically unwell (sepsis, respiratory infections, asthma exacerbations etc) from across the West Midlands. As a tertiary hospital, patients with complex medical conditions (tracheostomy, ventilation, congenital cardiac conditions) from across the West Midlands will use the Emergency Department to access urgent care.
  • On a national scale, the Emergency Department is one of the busiest departments and cares for over 60,000 patients per annum. Therefore, Dr Kanani has significant experience of leading the care of the variety of primary, secondary or tertiary level patients who are injured or unwell and need to access urgent or emergency care.
  • As a Medical Director of the Advanced Paediatric Life Support Course and Instructor on the European Trauma Course, Dr Kanani keeps teaches the current evidence-based approach to unwell or injured patients to an international audience.

Medico Legal Experience

  • Dr Kanani is the Governance Lead for the department. Therefore, he leads the investigation and management of the whole of spectrum of incidents (medication errors through to mortality) that take place within the department. Specifically, he leads the reviews of all departmental morbidity and mortality cases. This experience is used to provide an investigatory view on cases which occur throughout the Urgent and Critical Care directory.
  • He is also a Clinical Advisor (Paediatric Emergency Medicine) to the Parliamentary Ombudsman. Therefore, he has experience of reviewing difficult cases (from across the country) in cases where there has been a difference in opinion between the Trust and the family. Dr Kanani has provided a number of reports to the Ombudsman and recieved positive feedback on his report and timely response. 
  • Dr Kanani has been trained through the Bond Solon course and supplemented his training with paediatric specific medico legal training from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.
  • He has experience of working with the regulator (GMC) and defence unions as he has supported a Doctor who was subject to a GMC investigation.
  • Dr Kanani has and maintains his ICO registration. He also understands the medico legal responsibilties placed upon him through the Academy of Royal Colleges and maintains his medico legal CPD. 

Teaching and Examining

  • Dr Kanani has been a Training Program Director within the School of Paediatrics, West Midlands since 2023. Therefore, he has significant experience and understanding of the training and clinical expectations of paediatricians at various levels of training.
  • As a trainer, Dr Kanani is aware of the standard expected of training paediatricians as he has been involved in the examinations of postgraduate (MRCPCH level) and undergraduate paediatric exams.
