Ms. Alex Keegan

Ms Alexandra Keegan is a Consultant Paediatrician at the University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust.  

With over 20 years of post-graduate medical experience (8 as substantive full time consultant) including 19 years of post-graduate paediatric experience. Ms Keegan has a knowledge of general paediatrics with specialist interest in paediatric oncology, acute paediatrics and paediatric palliative care.

Acute paediatric experience in -
• Paediatric sepsis
• Paediatric acute respiratory – including asthma, pneumonia, bronchioloitis.
• Paediaric allergy
• Paediatric oncology including diagnosis of children with solid, neuro-oncology and haematological malignancies.
• Paediatic gastroenterology – including infant nutrition  and feeding, Gastro-oesophageal reflux, coeliac.
• Paediatric nephrology – including nephrotic syndrome, urinary tract infection, hypertension.
• Paediatric neurology – including headaches, seizures.
• Paediatric cardiology – including congenital heart disease, arrythmias

Specialist paediatric experience includes:
• Lead for UHD in paediatric oncology including diagnosis and initial investigation and management.
• Regional lead for diagnostic pathway from General Practice in secondary care for suspected new diagnosis of oncological conditions. Including author of new referral pathway guidance for Wessex regional area. ( Paediatric Urgent Referral for Suspected Cancer in under 16s – Wessex Cancer Alliance. A Keegan 2022).
• Specialist interest in pathways of diagnosis of sepsis in the acute paediatric setting – lead investigator for UHD for  serious trust and regional incidents. Regional case presentation (Peadiatric Critical Care Course – University Hospital Southampton, 2023)
• Lead for University Hospital Dorset for implementation of the PEWS ( Paediatric Early Warning System)  across the paediatric unit and implementation of Martha’s Law on call for concern across UHD.
• Specialist interest in consent in children – have attended regional and national training  as well as conducted two regional presentations on consent and ethical considerations in paediatric oncology and palliative care.
• APLS – Advanced Paediatric Life Support certification ( recertified 2024)

Ms Keegan has over 5 years’ experience providing expert opinion for clinical negligence claims as an expert advisor. With over 6 years experience providing paediatric opinion for NHS trust serious incident reports. Including 2 regional presentations. She has undertaken specialist Expert Witness training with the Bond Solon Certificate completed and passed. Bond Solon modules include: Expert in Report Writing, Courtroom Skills, Cross Examination and Civil Law and Procedure.
