Details

Dr Smith has been in medical practice for over 20 years and has been working in the medico-legal field since 2018. He undertakes medico-legal work alongside busy NHS and private practice in acute and general internal medicine, and toxicology through substance abuse medicine. He practices at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals NHS Trust in London where he is the Clinical Lead for acute medicine, as well as working on the Acute Assessment Unit at the private Cromwell Hospital.

In his time undertaking medico-legal work, he has provided over 300 expert opinions, both preliminary opinions and for disclosure, predominantly via the TMLEP intermediary.

Due to the nature of the TMLEP caseload, the majority of these opinions have been on behalf of the Defendant, although he has experience of generating reports on the instruction of the Claimant, with an approximate 65:35 split.

Dr Smith is also experienced in attending case conferences during litigation proceedings with lawyers and clinicians and has experience of joint opposing expert case conferences and the compilation of joint expert reports.

Benefitting from an extremely broad patient mix and high numbers of acute case presentations, Dr Smith is uniquely placed to opine on a wide range of unselected medical presentations under the umbrella of the acute medicine scope of practice, and is well versed in national guidelines related to acute medicine practice in all facets. He also is comfortable and experienced in providing life expectancy estimates based on case records assessment.

As a nascent medical specialty, acute medicine is recently established within clinical practice, and Dr Smith has been privileged to be a proponent and scholar of this discipline since soon after its founding which places him in an enviable position to comment upon acute medical cases from the perspective of specific and specialised acute medicine training which he has benefitted from since the speciality's inception.

Dr Smith has also broadened and specialised his acute medicine practice through the development of knowledge and skills in medical toxicology and forensic medical sciences with qualifications in both, and he is a registered Medical Examiner with the Royal College of Pathologists, as well as the prior Lead Medical Examiner for the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark.

Dr Smith is aware of the requirements of CPR Part 35, Practice Direction 35 and the Guidance for the Instruction of Experts in Civil Claims 2014 and the subsequent updates, and abides by these regulations.
