Dr Ronan O'Leary is a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia, appointed to Cambridge University Hospitals in 2013. His primary clinical focus is on Neurosciences and Trauma Critical Care, as well as Trauma Anaesthesia.
Following his training in the UK, Dr O’Leary completed a fellowship in Melbourne, Australia, before taking up his consultant appointment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. He is also an Associate Professor affiliated with the Clinical School at the University of Cambridge, a Senior Clinical Tutor with the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education, and a member of the NHS England Clinical Reference Group for Adult Critical Care. In his NHS practice, Dr O'Leary has held leadership and governance roles at Trust, regional, and national levels, and ais consulted by hospitals across the UK and Australia for second opinions on cases of the utmost clinical gravity.
Dr O’Leary provides expert opinion in critical care - particularly in major trauma and neurosciences - as well as anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, healthcare systems, and complex medical decision-making. His Court of Protection experience includes a high-profile case in which he acted as ‘Doctor A’ regarding serious medical treatment involving a patient with a prolonged disorder of consciousness due to neurological complications of Covid, Re AH (Serious Medical Treatment [2021] EWCOP 51), where Hayden J described his evidence as “extremely impressive”.
He also has recognised expertise in electronic patient records, digital governance, and clinical informatics. He established and directed the Cambridge Healthcare Data Programme and has contributed to national working groups focused on integrating data-driven approaches into critical care and wider healthcare system decision-making.
